How the story began

Celtic Woman is an all-female musical ensemble conceived and assembled by Sharon Browne and David Downes, a former musical director of the Irish stage show "Riverdance". In 2004 David Downes recruited an aggregate of five Irish female artists who had not previously performed together: vocalists Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Lisa Kelly and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt, who became the first representatives of Celtic Woman. David Downes proposed a repertoire that would range from traditional Celtic tunes to modern songs.

Méav, Máiréad, Órla, Lisa and Chloë (f.l.t.r.)

The origin concept was to tap into the American marketplace’s taste for Celtic music and culture by creating a group that blended the Irish elements of music and dance. Sharon and David submitted their idea to PBS (Public Broadcasting Service; a consolidation of local TV stations, similar to ARD in Germany) and they agreed to produce and finance the taping of the first Celtic Woman concert on September 15th., 2004 which resulted in the DVD "New Age - Live At The Helix".

The intent was to tape just this event and to broadcast it only in the US and, due to the proximity, Canada. On January 27th., 2005 PBS and CCE (Clear Channel Entertainment; a leading producer and marketer of live entertainment events) announced that they had arranged an exclusive live touring partnership and television production deal. The first result of this new arrangement was the summer tour of Celtic Woman in 2005. CCE presented twenty shows of Celtic Woman between July 8th. and August 7th. at various venues.

But nobody expected such a success!!!
As soon as the "Helix" concert was aired on PBS, videos (usually captured in violation of copyright) began popping up all over the internet. The buzz spread by word of mouth, email, and those videos quickly went viral. Celtic Woman almost didn’t make any efforts to market themselves outside the States so those videos, blog posts, emails, etc., were largely responsible for spreading the Celtic Woman gospel all over the world.

Meanwhile each of the current and former members of Celtic Woman has her own Forum on the net. Additionally there’s a huge and very active fan base in several countries who produced their own creative and outstanding sites to support Celtic Woman. ’chloe-agnew.net’ is just one of them...

The story so far

Celtic Woman’s story has, from the very beginning, been one of overwhelming success.

Between their debut album "New Age", their christmas CD "A Christmas Celebration" and their third album "A New Journey" Celtic Woman has held the Number 1 position on the "Billboard World Music Charts" for a record-breaking 95 consecutive weeks.

Their CDs and DVDs have gone platinum in the U.S. and South Africa, as well as going gold as far a field as Australia and Japan.

Concerts & Tours

To date they have completed five triumphantly successful U.S. tours, selling out such exalted venues as New York’s ’Radio City Music Hall’ and ’Carnegie Hall’, Boston’s ’Opera House’ and L.A.’s ’Greek Theatre’.
Celtic Woman’s PBS special has also been a runaway hit, airing an incredible 3,400 times and 316 different PBS stations since its debut in March of 2005. The group’s live TV special,

"A New Journey: Live at Slane Castle"

premiered on December 6th, 2006 on PBS with more than 90% of all PBS stations on board to broadcast the special during the December pledge period, exceeding previous successes on PBS.
The concert was filmed at Slane Castle, Co. Meath, on the banks of the Boyne River, the home of Ireland’s ancient High Kings and the wellspring of Celtic culture.

Celtic Woman’s following in the United States, where they have performed in the White House to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, is now being rivalled by the group’s popularity in the rest of the world.
Tours in Japan, Germany, South Africa and Canada have all been hugely successful. The numbers keep getting higher and the Celtic Woman name keeps getting bigger.

4th Album

On September 22nd, 2008 Celtic Woman published the fourth album

"The Greatest Journey - Essential Collection". Still, despite the many recent triumphs for this uniquely Irish success story, the best is definitely yet to come...

"Songs From The Heart"

Lisa, Alex, Máiréad, Lynn and Chloë at "Powerscourt House & Gardens"

The special was aired on U.S. TV for the very first time on October 29th. 2009. During the following weeks almost all PBS stations aired the special too. The taping itself resulted in...

5th Album

"Songs From The Heart" was released on January 26th, 2010. Unfortunately the album wasn’t available outside the States first.

The album does justice to its title! Songs that go beneath your skin, songs straight from the heart...
If you’re afraid of getting goosebombs do not listen to this album!!!

Since November 27th, 2010 there’s exclusively through "PBS" an additional album named "Lullaby" available.

The album can only be bought in the States with a donation to "PBS" of at least USD 40!

The story continues...

Over 6 million albums sold worldwide, 90 weeks at #1 in the World Music Charts and sold out tours with over 1.5 million visitors in nearly all continents. The success of Celtic Woman, founded in 2004, is without any doubt more than impressive. And finally, in 2011 the magical singers will return to German and Austrian stages after three years.

The love for Irish music and culture is still unbeaten, and so Celtic Woman have become an international, worldwide incomparable phenomenon. The impressive vocalists and their virtuous celtic violinist combine traditional Irish music with modern songs from artists such as Phil Collins, Mariah Carey and Sting. But especially the fascinating live-performances of the quartet is an expression of their art and offers the frame for their extraordinary talents to form a very special work of art. The show offers room for the magical voices of the vocalists: either as soloists, with every singer presenting a very distinctive style as well as a very emotional ensemble. The current line up features the celestial vocals of Lisa Kelly, Chloë Agnew & Lisa Lambe and the dynamic inventiveness of Celtic Violinist Máiréad Nesbitt.

Countless and acclaimed appearances at Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall (New York City), The Greek Theatre (Los Angeles), Orchard Hall (Tokyo), Entertainment Centre (Sydney) and The Point Theatre (Dublin), are the highlight of every season. A Grammy-Nomination for their TV-Special "Songs From The Heart, Live at Powerscourt House & Gardens" underlines one more time the outstanding quality of the production, and honours the work of the artistes and their musical director David Downes at the same time.

On January 21st, 2011 the new album "Songs from the Heart" (EMI) will be released in Germany and will be featured in their upcoming tour in June. With their very own and gracious versions of songs such as "Fields Of Gold", "Amazing Grace" and "Níl Sé’n Lá", they will enlighten the concert-halls. For the German version of the album, Celtic Woman also offers some special songs, such as the bonus-track "Forever Young" (the global chart-breaker of the Eighties Munich Band Alphaville). A special thanks for their German-speaking friends is given by Celtic Woman with two exclusively recorded German songs, which are "Wenn Du in meinen Träumen bei mir bist" (a German version of the evergreen "Over The Rainbow") and the Silbermond-Song "Symphonie".

And you will also be able to experience Celtic Woman in December, when the group will be appearing at the annual José Carreras Gala. Here they will celebrate their Irish roots and will warm everybody’s hearts a performance full of love and hope. One could sum it up by saying: heavenly beautiful!
